Navy takes hold of 02 poaching trawlers in Sri Lankan waters

The Sri Lanka Navy conducted a special operation to chase away Indian poaching trawlers from Sri Lankan waters on the evening of 16th January 2024. The operation led to the seizure of 02 Indian trawlers with 18 Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters off Mannar. The Navy conducts regular patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters to curb illegal fishing practices by foreign fishing trawlers, taking into account the consequences of these practices on the livelihood of local fishermen and marine resources of the country. In continuation of these efforts, the North Central Naval Command deployed its Inshore Patrol Craft to chase away a cluster of Indian poaching trawlers, after having spotted they were engaging in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters on 16th January. Fourth day of Leading Engineering Mechanic RPSK Siriwardana’s epic 580km trek successfully concludes

The Sri Lanka Navy’s Leading Engineering Mechanic RPSK Siriwardana on 12th January 2024 began a challenging 580-kilometer walk over 08 days, with the ambitious goal of establishing a new national record. In a remarkable display of endurance, he successfully concluded the fourth day of the walk at the Independence Square, Colombo on 15th January. With the completion of 76km and 400m within the fourth day from Madampe to the Independence Square, he has covered a distance of 294km and 400m as of now. Organized under the auspices of the Sri Lanka Navy, this walk, aimed at setting a new national record, is conducted under the close supervision of the Ministry of Sports and subject to the evaluation of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura. Starting from the Independence Square, the fifth day is scheduled to be completed in Nittambuwa on 16th January. Meanwhile, he has thus far covered half of the expected 580 kilometers of the 08 days of walking.

Navy finds Kerala cannabis valued over Rs. 13 million on Pungudutivu Island

The Sri Lanka Navy recovered about 34kg of Kerala cannabis during a search operation conducted on the Pungudutivu Island, Jaffna on 15th January 2024. The consignment of Kerala cannabis had been hidden in shrubs in the beach vicinity, when it was found by the Navy. The search operation was mounted by SLNS Gotaimbara in the Northern Naval Command on the afternoon of 15th January. During the operation, naval personnel found a suspicious sack hidden away in shrubs in the Iruppidi beach of the Pungudutivu Island. When searched, the sack had been stuffed with 16 parcels of Kerala cannabis weighing about 34kg. The gross street value of the recovered stock of Kerala cannabis is believed to be more than Rs. 13 million. The haul of Kerala cannabis has been kept in the safe custody of the Navy, until it is handed over to authorities for onward legal action.
